An unshakable belief in herself, an unyielding ability to focus and make her own dreams and goals a reality and a creative, entrepreneurial flair have all helped Rebecca Wells to firmly establish herself as both a cutting-edge peak performance coach and businesswoman.
As the Founder and Director of both Clear Horizon Coaching and Ask Rebecca How (launching in April 2010), Rebecca has established a highly targeted personal and professional development enterprise, empowering professional women to lead their lives with greater passion, fulfilment and success.
Sitting by a lake in London’s idyllic Hyde Park, surrounded by bread-infatuated geese, Rebecca’s struggle to understand her true calling in life dramatically ended.
Working for a leading advertising agency at the time, Rebecca was managing huge global projects for the likes of HSBC; Kimberley Clark; and Cadbury Schweppes. There was ample challenge on offer but Rebecca felt unsettled and there was a huge ‘something’ missing. Ironically, despite the environment, Rebecca felt her own creativity was being stifled and the extremely long hours were taking their toll.
“I remember feeling as though my career had control over me and that I was riding a tidal wave that I didn’t want to be on any more. I was frustrated, felt deeply dissatisfied and knew I had more to offer but was laden with uncertainty: ‘What are my alternatives? This is all I know'; 'How transferable are my skills?'; 'What really is my life’s purpose?’ I was spending so much energy just getting through every day that I never seemed to have any in reserve to think about how to get off this treadmill… and even if I did, what would it be to do?”
The final straw came when Rebecca’s usual steadfast self-confidence began to wane.
“When you are operating in environments that don’t play to your strengths, or meet your values, it is inevitable that your self-belief will take a hit. You’re constantly being asked to perform tasks that simply ‘don’t do it for you’ or that don’t play to your natural talents. I knew that I had to break this cycle fast and to do that was going to take guts and a whole load of energy I knew I'd have to dig deep to find... but I knew my calling was out there and I was absolutely determined to find it.”
With the support of her family and partner Ross, Rebecca decided the place to start was to understand herself much better: what made her who she was and what really got her pulse racing?
"From being very young I have always been absolutely fascinated by people and get a real thrill from observing how they interact. I think my upbringing in Hong Kong had an incredibly positive impact on me in terms of that. It's such a dynamic, culturally diverse environment where the focus is on both working and playing hard and relishing in your successes. I knew that 'people' were what I truly valued, which led me to explore how I could help others enjoy more fulfilment and success in their lives."
Finding your life's purpose is obviously no easy feat. It takes time, persistence, focus, energy and commitment. Managing the process and constantly adapting to find ways to make it all work were key, enabling Rebecca to push through the barrier.
“A process that took me a number of energy sapping months led me to a life-changing 60 minute Starbucks conversation with a coach called Sarah Bronfman. Within 10 minutes of speaking to her about what coaching was all about, I suddenly got very excited. What Sarah described sounded exactly what I was looking for: an opportunity to make a profound difference to others' lives; flexibility; creativity; huge learning potential; and an opportunity to connect at a deeper level. Getting to that point in time taught me so much about myself; my determination; the importance of believing in myself; blocking out any negative influences; and respecting that I had the ability to find my own answers if I wanted them badly enough.”
Over the course of 2 years, Rebecca graduated with two Distinction diplomas, in Personal and Corporate coaching, from The Coaching Academy, Europe’s largest coach training institution. Having read a great deal about NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and the complementary practices it affords, Rebecca was keen to add NLP to her armoury and qualified from The Institute of Human Technology in Sydney, as an NLP Practitioner, a few months after moving to Sydney.
“Although coaching is a phenomenally powerful practice in its own right, adding NLP into the mix is, quite literally, mind-blowing. NLP enables me to work at a much deeper level with my clients, often at the level of their values and beliefs, to change unhelpful belief and behavioural patterns to create long-lasting change.”
"A couple of years ago, I read a book written by a guy called Larry Winget. He's a coach and also, perhaps a little unusally, a cowboy. He delivers speeches to organisations all around the world dressed in his electric blue cowboy boots, denim shirt and elaborate tassled cow-hide jacket. His only speech topic? Authenticity. He's a guy who understands the importance of being true to yourself - that's where we all do our best work, whatever that may be. At the end of the day, that's what everyone wants: to lead a life that fulfills them deeply and that gives them a reason for existing. As soon as I discovered my coaching niche everything fell into place for me."
Rebecca works with professional women from a range of key industries including Finance, Law, Advertising, and Recruitment. Her specialism is 'discovering your true calling in life' and has finessed her coaching models and programs to establish a truly holistic approach to helping her clients solve their 'life purpose' challenges.
"There's nothing more satisfying than seeing a client become completely introspective. All the chatter in her head stops as she considers the lightbulb thought that has just flashed through her mind. A smile slowly spreads across her face as it begins to dawn on her how her core values, strengths, passions and natural talents are all working together to explain what you were put on this earth to do. Sometimes my clients find that something in the 'career' arena is their true calling, for others 'being a mum', 'volunteering' or 'giving back' are also quite common, whilst for some women how to balance doing it all is what they most value."
The extremely empowering coaching programs that Rebecca provides around 'finding life's purpose' are what many of her clients desire but there are a number of other core areas where her clients seek her expertise.
“I find professional women extremely fascinating and the most rewarding clients to work with. Not only do they tend to value deeply their personal and professional development, they also have more interesting challenges for coaching often juggling multiple roles, activities and aspirations. There are a number of areas where I add real value namely, leadership; building confidence; developing really engaging communications skills; as well as short and long term personal and professional goal planning.”
Since launching Clear Horizon Coaching in 2005, Rebecca has broadened the scope from her prized private coaching programs to include group courses, in ‘Presenting Confidence’; ‘Leadership’; ‘Conflict Resolution’; and ‘Understanding the Impact of Language and Behaviour’ as well as group coaching opportunities through her latest launch, Premium PowerGroups.
She is a regular speaker at varied events and her many articles have been featured in “HR Monthly”; “QCG Magazine”; “Mum’s At Work” and “Expatwomen” and has also been interviewed by BBC Radio 5 Live.
With the imminent launch of ‘Ask Rebecca How’, Rebecca is looking to expand her offering to even more professional women.
“It has always been a desire of mine to bring coaching to a wider audience. Although a tailored one-on-one environment is certainly the most powerful means to experience true ‘change’ and growth, I have designed ‘Ask Rebecca How’ for those who prefer the support of a group environment, or like to learn in their own time and at their own pace.”
‘Ask Rebecca How’ comprises of Premium PowerGroups of up to 10 members who work in pairs to solve their challenges. April 2010 will see the launch of PowerBreakfasts, a fortnightly gathering of 50+ professional women, again working in pairs to help each other achieve more of their goals and aspirations.
Rebecca Wells is no ordinary coach. Being focused nearly as much on developing herself and her business, as she is the lives of her precious private clients, Rebecca has been able to build Clear Horizon Coaching into a sustainable coaching practice that continues to add value to her clients time and time again.
“I firmly believe in investing in my own success and work regularly with my own business and coaching mentors and coaches. I am a vociferous reader and absorb everything that grabs my attention. Knowledge is everything – the more you know, the wider your comfort zone becomes. New ideas then flood your mind and fantastic new programs and opportunities are created!”
Rebecca plans her vision, to become the first provider of a holistic personal and professional services environment for professional women in Australia, from her beautiful house in Bondi Beach, Sydney.
